This used to be a really good forum for alcoholics (and partners of) to
share their experiences of recovery/relapse, to talk about what worked for
them and what didn't, and generally discuss the realities of being an
alcoholic in a friendly and intelligent way. Now it just seems to full of
pedants arguing the semantics of what constitutes a 'proper' Higher Power,
or a 'real' alcoholic.
Does it really matter what route an alcoholic takes to get sober, and stay
sober? What works for one may not work for another, and only bigots who
don't want to admit that they have a problem would insist that Their Way
is
the Only Way, and everyone else's way must be wrong. It's one thing
singing
the praises of the method that works/worked for you, but it's quite
another
to sling mud at methods that worked and are working for others. This can
be
very undermining to an alcoholic who is just starting out on a particular
road to recovery, and may even knock one or two so far back into the pit
of
despair thaht tthey never reach out for help again. Whether AA is your
thing, or a secular self-help programme, or psychiatric treatment, it is
only by sharing our experiences honestly and without vitriol that we can
we
hope to give help to those who are still looking, and find help when we
may
be faltering.
So can someone please tell me where all the good guys'n'gals hang out now?
I really miss the musings of Another Cultist, BeenThereGotAMug,
Dreamspinner3, Joe Jarad, JoeRaisin, nipntuk, Muddle, Tex ... Oh, and
there
were loads of others, too, who unknowingly helped me with their stories,
sound advice and good humour.
