Alleged abuse at a Florence, South Carolina recovery center <--

by Recovery Florence <noemail2sp@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sep 25, 2006 at 02:48 AM

The following article was extracted from http://recovery-in-
florence.blogspot.com/2006/09/owls-nest-recovery-house.html and if
you're interested and particularly living in South Carolina and are
part of the recovering community, I would encourage you to read it
and tell anyone who may be interested.

http://www.daodas.org
has been contacted and so has recently the
Governor's office. How this alleged abuse continues to occur and go
on in our community has many of us scratching our heads as to why
nothing is being done.

[...an excerpt...]

If we were concerned citizens hearing allegations of child abuse or
molestation at a daycare provider wouldn't one phone call to some
government agency take care of that? We don't think we would need
to get affidavits from the children or the daycare workers or the
children's' parents would we? Of course not.

If suspecting mistreatment of the elderly at a nursing home, would
we need notarized affidavits from the somewhat incapacitated
elderly? Or how about from the man who has Alzheimer's but
continues to show bruises or perhaps fear when a certain orderly
enters the room? Couldn't we start with the director of the
facility and work our way up from there if we saw no signs of
improvement? Now, what if we suspected the Director of abuses? What
if the Director of this government subsidized nursing facility was
involved in constant allegations from residents or their families?
Would we not have recourse to go above even him?

We are a group of people who are concerned and have continually
come across disturbing information and allegations from past
"residents" over what has gone on and seemingly continues to go on
at a place that calls itself the "Owl's Nest Recovery House" in or
about the Florence, S.C. area.

#
What if the owner slept with the female residents?

#
What if female residents were belittled, called "crack whores," and
if didn't have *** with the owner, faced jail time for being kicked
out [not completing the program?]

#
What if residents were made to apply for food stamps and then when
accepted, food stamps were pooled together? Would that not violate
rules for food stamps use?

#
What if residents were forced to give up their doctor prescribed
medication upon entering and it's up to the "staff" to dispense it
or not? What if a seizure or a psychotic break occurred? Who would
be responsible?

#
No medically trained personnel would be on site. No doctors,
nurses, psychologists, and yet claiming itself a recovery house at
least to the rehab facilities and to the judges [?]. Practicing
medicine without a license? The staff has no authority to handle
the medication it seizes and dispenses if this is true; no
medically trained personnel to handle emotional breakdowns; in
fact, no checks and balances of any sort.

#
What if no licensing of any kind to be doing "therapy" such as
giving residents something humiliatingly called the shut the ****
up bucket? Practicing Medicine without a license.

#
Though it claims itself as an "AA based recovery house," what if
residents were not allowed to go to AA meetings, though it would be
mandatory they attend the house meetings - which is not AA because
AA prohibits its name from being associated with any commercial
enterprise or movement?

#
What if the owner has kicked women and men out in the middle of the
night for failing to have rent payment? Landlord/Tenant violation.
That's illegal even if the resident has NOT paid.

#
What if the owner has physically manhandled/physically abused and
threatened residents?

[...end excerpt...]

These are just a few allegations made by past residents. First
hand, several of us have had the op****tunity to work with some of
these ex-residents and smoking crack with the owner was a common
story we would get together and discover. Addiction is bred through
secrecy and this place is full of them it seems. We want an
investigation.

Thank you for reading and please pass it on to anyone who may be
interested in helping.
