my amazing closet declutter (saves time and mental energy)

by medium <mediumgnome@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jul 24, 2008 at 12:18 PM

I call it amazing because it actually worked!

A few years back I was in weight watchers, near my goal weight and had
some clothes that almost fit me. I tried on clothes and put the ones
that almost fit in a section near the ones I was able to fit in as an
incentive. Next to that section was another batch of clothes for when
I was even smaller. When you're close to goal every few pounds makes
or breaks a pair of pants or skirt.

The result.
I always knew what fit and did not end up discouraged because what you
put on didn't fit and back on the hanger and rod it goes.

This time I went further.
Often recommended is removing everythign from the closet and return
only what you are keeping. I rounded up my all clothing tin my home
(i.e. ironing pile, mending pile) and tried each item.

Make the trying on part easier:
Group items together so you are trying on only pants in one stint,
then only tops, dressess, etc. Have shoes all ready on the floor so
you just need to step into a pair. I recommend wearing a neutral top
when trying on the skirts or pants and vice versa.

Have someone with you.
They can confirm what you might be thinking such as whether the item
is really you or not. You can also see their reaction, good or bad
and it can help you make up your mind.

Keep what you love and makes you feel great.
Assign a size.
If you are a smaller woman a few extra pounds can make the difference
in how an item fits so you may need to keep a variety of clothing.

My sizing method is 1 - 5 and goes like this:
size 1 - way too small but if I get quite sick or return to my
smallest I've been in the last 5-10 years I'll atleast have something
to wear that I like.
size 2 - just ten pounds away size but I've been there enough times I
know it can happen again so I'll need some clothes
size 3 - (almost a 2, almost a 4) looks too tight but can wear if I
wear something over it, i.e. a very long blouse, tunic or jacket.
this usually applied to pants
size 4 - fits me perfectly now.
size 5 - obviously too large but if I should ten pounds due to broken
ankle, medication side effect, etc. I'll need something to wear that I
really like.

Labeling the garment/hanger was im****tant for me.
a tem****ary paper label was draped over part of the hanger and
stapled. On it I put a size on it and also a very brief descpription
of the item.

Ironing went into the closet with hanger reversed.
When it's time to iron I know where to find it and I have one less
pile or two around the house taking up space.

Mending got done immediately or sent to the closet with a special tag
indicating what was to be done.

Get the clothes out of the house.
We have a new consignment shop in town just for women's clothing.
It's fabulous. All up to date stuff, no damage, on hangers, ironed
and colour coordinated. Also, each day there is a new window
display. I have sold so much there in the last month it's wonderful.
Yes, I've bought four new items but they are ones I felt great and
looked great in. Even wore them to my high school reunion this year.

Managing the hardest part.
1. Sore buttocks and hamstrings - stretch before you do all that
trying on and bending over. I'm serious!
2. Those expensive clothes are not looking any better on the hanger.
Use them or lose them. Don't let them keep nagging at you.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Each time I go to my closet I know there is something to ready to
wear. Saves a bundle of time and mental energy.
